Diet • Floss

▢ Start a three-day cleansing diet. This isn't as weird or drastic as it sounds. You basically do two things, one long-term and one short-term: 1) From now on, try to eat less of everything -- you want to be a little bit hungry, never stuffed. 2) For the next few days, cut out a few basic foods. This is the slightly strange but extremely beneficial part. Some people are allergic to foods and don't know it. Not face-puffs-up allergic but inflammation-somewhere-in-your-body allergic. The allergy is not going to kill you, but flushing these foods from your system every so often is a good idea. Two of the most common cases are dairy products and any of the grains associated with gluten. So for the next three days, don't have any dairy, and don't eat any wheat products or rye. (Barley also contains gluten, so no beer, either.) The purpose is to reboot your system and give your liver a break. See if you feel better.

Then go back to your regular diet, but now that you're aware of what life feels like without the crap you normally eat, maybe you'll be more attentive and more cautious about what you do eat.

You might ask: During this cleansing, are there any suitable replacements for the gluteny foods that normally fill me up? We would answer: Yes, two very cool foods called chia and quinoa.

Chia was an ancient Aztec warrior food. The Spaniards burned the chia fields when they chased the Aztecs to prevent them from using the crop to feed their warriors. It's very compact, so they'd put it in little satchels on their belts, but it expands twelvefold in water. It is very rich in omega-3 fats and looks like the wheat germ some people order in smoothies. Sprinkle it on cereal, eggs, salads, and yogurt as a whole grain. (Salba chia seed, $25 for 300 grams, nationalnutrition.ca; Fun Fresh Foods chia seeds, $6.79 for 6 oz powder, vitaminshoppe.com)

Quinoa is a whole grain that has a complete array of amino acids, so it's high in protein -- a very balanced food. They serve it sometimes here at the Esquire cafeteria, and people seem to enjoy it.)

▢ Floss. This is obviously good for your dental hygiene. Remember, you only have to floss the teeth you want to keep. But the real reason to do it every night is that flossing reduces arterial inflammation. If one part of you is being invaded by bacteria, your body mounts an immune response. Now, the immune response doesn't come without a cost -- it's as if you're cracking down on rogue gangs with stricter law enforcement; it makes life more difficult for everyone. If your gums are infected, your entire body suffers from the inflammation that is part of the immune response. So unhealthy gums, in fact, increase the risk of heart attacks, autoimmune problems, and other maladies you don't want. Not doing something as easy as flossing is what we in the medical community call stupid.

▢ Throw away these three food items:

White bread: Empty calories.

Soft drinks: Even diet sodas, which are no better than the usual sugar-filled variety. If studies existed proving that diet sodas help you diet, you probably would have heard by now. In fact, diet soda appears to increase your chances of developing chronic diseases and gaining weight.

Salad dressing: Salad is wonderful, but most store-bought dressings are not -- plus, they're a rip-off. Extra-virgin olive oil and vinegar are healthier and cheaper. If you're dumping six hundred calories' worth of some mayonnaise-ketchupy glop onto an otherwise wholesome salad, you might as well eat a Big Mac.
